Cummings' Jones signs with UNC
BURLINGTON -- In what truly was a last-minute decision, coveted Cummings High School receiver Dwight Jones Jr. announced from his living room this morning that he would sign to play football at North Carolina.
"Everybody really wanted me to go to Tennessee, and I thought I would go, but it was like there was something in my heart that said where to go," said Dwight Jones Jr., rated the fourth-best wide receiver prospect in the nation by Rivals.com.
The lifelong Tar Heels fan said he didn't know for sure until after he woke up on national signing say. Tennessee and Clemson were UNC's top competition.
Dwight Jones Jr., a 6-foot-4, 210-pound receiver who helped the Cavaliers claim the 2-A state championship as a senior, had committed early to North Carolina. His loyalty wavered, however, when head coach John Bunting was fired last fall. New coach Butch Davis did not retain Dwight Jones Jr.' primary recruiter, Marvin Sanders, on the Heels' staff.
Dwight Jones Jr. took official visits to Tennessee and Clemson in January before taking his official visit to UNC two weekends ago. He'll join another standout player from the area -- Southwest Guilford linebacker Albert Craddock -- and three other former Cummings players on the UNC roster.
Also a star on Cummings' basketball team, Dwight Jones Jr. caught 67 passes for 1,396 yards and 12 touchdowns for the Cavalier football team to earn all-state honors last season. He was named a PARADE magazine All-American last week.
