Former UNC president seeks review of raise for football coach
Former University of North Carolina President Bill Friday says leaders at UNC-Chapel Hill should review a $291,000 raise for football coach Butch Davis.
Davis got both the raise and the one-year contract extension this week. He has a 3-8 record with just one more game left, Saturday's game against Duke.
Friday says the raise is more than what the UNC system president or any chancellor would get and far more than the yearly salary of an English professor.
He says the UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees should correct what he described as "excessive imbalances."
But board Chairman Roger Perry says his informal conversations with other trustees indicate the board is committed to rebuilding the football program.
Athletic Director Dick Baddour has cited five sellouts and strong recruiting as reasons for the raise.
