Last-minute decisions strengthen Davis' first class at UNC
New North Carolina football coach Butch Davis wanted to recruit as many home-state gems as he could.
So Davis was in for a pleasant surprise when several late-deciding blue chip prospects picked North Carolina. That includes what one service said was the best defensive line recruit in the country, and a pair of in-state receiving stars.
In all, ten state natives signed with the Tar Heels. The surprising last-minute additions of defensive lineman Marvin Austin of Washington, D.C.; receiver Greg Little of nearby Durham and wideout Dwight Jones Jr. of Burlington was enough to boost Davis' first recruiting class into the nation's elite.
